On Saturday I was at the movies. The millions of new blockbuster called "avatar - Pandora". In the description is that it is a science fiction movie. Computer-animated, fascinating images from a fairytale world. A moving story set on the faraway planet Pandora. Na'vi called the natives of this planet who live in close relationship and a perfect harmony with nature and are being threatened by evil, greedy people who have come in their spaceship from the planet Earth. So far the description. But the longer I sit in the cinema and the more I let myself be carried away by the story becomes even more clear to me: this is not science fiction. What because in almost three hours to tell, is absolutely over long distances, the real story of Na'vi on the distant planet Pandora is repeated hundreds of times every day on our planet. It is a story that I encounter constantly in my work. A story against their cruel exit we - fight constantly - Misereor and partner organizations in Latin America, Asia and Africa. My Pandora is Cajamarca. It is located in northern Peru. My Na'vi are simple farmers, Cajamarquinos that are threatened by greedy companies from foreign countries in its existence. The companies want the precious resources on the land of Cajamarquinos. You want these resources and must at all costs. They are quite also ready for it to stop at nothing. What is the Na'vi in the film is the sacred tree, in Cajamarca Cerro Quilish. No tree, but a mountain. But not just any mountain, any more than the sacred tree in the movie "Avatar" any tree. It is a sacred place. An inviolable place. A sacred spot. A place where the worship of mother earth and bring Cajamarquinos victims.
The U.S. mining company Newmont can hardly impressed by such spiritual spinning. As the evil people in the film Avatar of the divine energy that gives the sacred tree the Na'vi, can only laugh scornfully, so wipe Newmont also the argument of the sanctity the Cerro Quilish out of hand from the table. The Cajamarquinos in Peru to fight: to their sacred mountain. In order to maintain their water sources. For their land. To preserve the God-given creation. The Cajamarquinos have no weapons. You walk or ride horses. You have no tear gas, no Bulldozers and no helicopters. You have only one thing: her conviction. Weapons and power of the two opponents are very unequal. In many, many places on this, our very real planet lose their day hundreds and thousands of farmers this unjust campaign. Must vacate their land. leave your holy places. Need to go away. To look for a new home. Not infrequently in the slums of large cities.
Pandora is not far from our planet. Avatar is not science fiction. The threat of the Na'vi are exposed to repeated thousands of times every day. All of this is real unusual to me is only that millions of people watching this film in the cinema, touch, can get carried along, in the spirit of cheer and hope that the Na'vi can defend their habitat. During the fight Cajamarquinos and many other threatened nations in the so-called "third world" their struggle against the big mining companies without large public and without millions of support.
